Yarn: Gong Plassard Nature 100 % cotton , 4 skeins of pink, 2 turqoise and 3 grey.
Hook: 3,5
Size of square: 15 x 15 cm
UK terminology used:
Ch – chain
St – stitch
Ss – slip stitch
Dc – double crochet
Lp – loop
Tr – treble crochet
Htr – half treble crochet
Dtr – double treble crochet
Puff st – puff stitch
Yarn over, insert hook into specified st, yarn over again and pull up a long loop
*yarn over, insert hook into same st, yarn over again and pull up a long loop*,
repeat * to * 4 times (11 loops on hook)
Yarn over and pull through all loops on the hook. Ch 1 to close the puff stitch.
Pc – popcorn
Make 3 tr in indicated stitch. Drop lp from hook, insert hook from front to back through top of first st made, place dropped lp on hook and pull through st, ch 1.
Round 1
Ch 5, join to initial ch 1 with a ss.
Round 2
Ch 3, acts as first tr + ch 1. *Tr, ch 1. Repeat * around 7 times. Join to initial ch 2 with a ss.
You now have 8 tr with ch 1 in between.
Round 3
Ch 2, acts as first tr. * 2 tr in ch-2 space, tr in tr.) Repeat * around. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have 24 tr.
Round 4
Ch 1, puff in same stitch . *2 tr between the 2 tr from round 4 made in ch-2 space , ch 1, skip tr, puff in tr, ch 1. Repeat * around and join with a ss in initial ch 1.
You now have 8 puffs with ch 1 + 2 tr + ch 1 in between.
Round 2 – 4
Round 5
Chain 4, acts as first tr + ch 2. Tr in same stitch as chain 1. *1 tr in ch-1 space. Tr in the following 2 tr, tr in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip puff, tr in ch-1 space, tr in the following 2 tr, tr in ch-1 space, tr + ch 2 + tr in next tr. Repeat * around, but the last time there will be no tr + ch 2 + tr in puff, since they are already made. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have 5t tr, ch 1, 5 tr on each side and ch 2 in the corners.
Round 6
Ch 3, acts as tr + ch 1. *puff + ch 2 + puff in ch-2 space. Tr in the following 3 tr, htr in next 2 tr, ch 1, skip ch-1 space, htr in next 2 tr, tr in next 3 tr, ch 1. Repeat* around, but the last time only tr in 2 tr since the third is already made. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have ch 1,3 tr, 2 htr, ch 1, 2 htr, 3 tr, ch 1 on each side, and 2 puffs with a ch-2 space in between, in the corners.
Round 7
Ch 2, acts as first tr. *Tr in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip puff, puff + ch 2+ puff in ch-2 space, ch 1′ skip puff, tr in ch1 space, tr in next 3 tr, tr in htr, ch 1, skip htr, popcorn in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip htr, tr in htr and in the following 3 tr. Repeat * around, but only tr in 2 tr the last time, since the third is already made. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have ch 1, 5 tr, ch 1, popcorn, ch 1, 5 tr, ch 1 on each side, and 2 puffs with a ch-2 space in between, in the corners.
Round 5 -7
Round 8
Ch 2, acts as first tr. *Tr in tr, 2 dtr in ch-1 space, skip puff, dtr + ch 2 + dtr in ch-2 space, skip puff, 2 dtr in ch-1 space, tr in next 2 tr, htr in next 2 tr, ch 1, skip 1 tr, popcorn in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip popcorn, popcorn in ch-1 space, ch 1, skip 1 tr, htr in next 2 tr, tr in next tr. Repeat *around, but no tr in tr the last time since it is already made. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have 2 dtr, 2 tr, 2 htr, ch 1, popcorn, ch 1, popcorn, ch 1, 2 htr, 2 tr and 2 dtr on each side and dtr + ch 2+ dtr in the corners.
Round 9
Ch 2, acts as first tr. *Tr in tr, tr in next 3 dtr, tr + ch 2 + tr in ch-2 space, tr in every dtr and in tr and in htr, ch 2, skip ch-1 space + popcorn, popcorn in ch-1 space, ch 2, skip popcorn + ch-1 space, tr in next two htr , tr in next tr. Repeat * around, but no tr in tr the last time since it is already made. Join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have 8 tr, ch 2, popcorn, ch 2, 8 tr on each side and ch-2 spaces in the corners.
Round 8 – 9
Round 10
Ch 1, acts as first dc. *Dc in every tr. Htr + ch 2 + htr in ch-2 space. Dc in every tr, 2 dc in ch-2 space, ch 1, skip popcorn, 2 dc in ch-2 space. Repeat *around, join with a ss in initial ch 1.
You now have 10 dc, ch 1, 10 dc on each side and and htr + ch 2 + htr in the corners.
Round 11
Ch 2, acts as first htr. Htr in next i next 5 dc *tr in htr, tr + ch 3 + tr in ch-2 space, tr in htr, htr in every dc, htr in ch-1 space, htr in every dc. Repeat *around, join with a ss in initial ch 2.
You now have 2 tr, 21 htr, 2 tr on each side and ch 3 in the corners.
Round 12
This round is worked in the back loop only, except for the corners.
Ch 1, acts as first dc. Dc in next 5 htr and in tr. * Htr in tr, htr + ch 3 + htr in ch-3 space, htr in tr, dc i next tr and in every htr. Repeat* around and join with a ss in initial ch 1.
You now have 2 htr, 23 dc, 2 htr on each side and ch 3 in the corners.
Fasten off.
Round 10 – 12
Tip: Block your squares when they are finished to get them to fit together exactly.
Sicily top:
You need 14 squares. It makes the size small/medium. If you want a bigger one, make extra rounds on your squares.
This is how one side of the top will look like like. The two green squares on the sides will join front and back.
I have joined my squares using the flat zipper method. You can find many good tutorials if you google it.
When all squares are joined it will look like this:
I made a border with grey yarn at the top, using dc all the way round.
This is how I made the straps: On the top of the pink front square, make 3 htr, dc, 3 htr. Then make 7 dc on every round til you get the length you want. Start every round with ch 1, does not count as a stitch. Join with the pink square on the back with 3 htr, dc, 3 htr. Fasten off.
I also made a grey border at the bottom of this top. The first round only using dc. The second round; * htr, ch, skip dc. Repeat* around, except in the two side corners where I made tr, ch 1, skip dc, dtr, ch 1, skip dc, tr.
Tassels: Cut 39 cm threads, 2 for every tassel. Put a tassel in every second chain-1 space.
